About this drawing
Away from the resorts, Fuerteventura at night is genuinely dark, and the palms stop being holiday decoration. They become structure — trunks like columns, crowns like vaulting.
Getting a night sky right on white paper is the whole problem of this drawing. Ink was laid down in successive passes, allowed to dry, then worked again, so the black has depth in it instead of sitting flat. Some of the sky was scratched back to give the impression of stars behind cloud.
The palms themselves are barely outlined. They exist because the sky stops where they are. That reversal — drawing the space and letting the subject appear in the gap — is the reason the piece feels lit from behind.
The ground is handled quickly and low in the sheet, so nearly the whole composition is sky.
Where this print hangs well
The most dramatic print in the archive. It carries a dark feature wall, a bedroom, or a dining room lit by lamplight rather than daylight.
Black frame, white mount, matte glazing — reflections are the enemy of a print with this much black in it.
