Gerald Allen Knowles is an architect, artist, and traveler whose work traces the quiet geometry of places across Europe and the islands of the Atlantic. His drawings carry the discipline of architectural observation — clean lines, measured shadows, and a sensitivity to structure.
From staircases in Saintes to volcanic landscapes in the Canary Islands, his sketchbooks read like field journals: immediate, intimate, shaped by decades of wandering with pen and paper in hand. His collages expand these impressions into compositions that feel both analytical and poetic.
Architectural, coastal and travel art prints
GAK Creations is the working archive of Gerald Allen Knowles — architect, artist and traveller. Every piece here began as a drawing made on location: an abbey in south-west France measured by eye in a single morning, a whitewashed chapel holding a volcanic slope in Fuerteventura, a blue boat left among the plants for a season on the Atlantic edge. The construction lines are usually still visible, because they are the honest record of how a place was understood.
The work divides into six collections. Architecture gathers the ink-and-wash building studies. Coastal holds the harbours, hulls and grey Atlantic light. Travel collages layer sketchbook pages with the paper carried home from a journey. Fuerteventura is the volcanic island work, drawn in lava black and lime white. Gaudí and modern landmarks follows the buildings that refuse the right angle, from Barcelona to Bilbao. And Nature and landscape gives the ground, the growth and the weather the attention the buildings usually get.
The method is consistent across all of it. Pencil first, to set a horizon and find the proportions. Ink second, for the structural edges and the shadow that gives a façade its weight. Wash last and fast, because atmosphere is the one thing that will have changed by lunchtime. Where a surface needs texture the brush cannot give — Castilian ochre, Basque titanium, volcanic grit — torn paper and collage do the work instead.
